April 7 to 17: Water Main Flushing Operation – Possible Water Discoloration
Water Main Flushing Operation
April 7 to 17, 2025
Between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. (outside peak hours)
The City of Bedford will be conducting a complete flushing of the water mains as well as a mechanical inspection of fire hydrants across its territory.
Why is this operation necessary?
The water main flushing aims to:
- Remove iron deposits and particles that may accumulate in the system.
- Maintain the quality of the water supplied to residents.
- Ensure the optimal functioning of fire hydrants through preventive inspection.
The operation involves temporarily increasing the water flow speed to flush out deposits through the fire hydrants. It is carried out during periods of low water consumption, following predetermined flushing sequences for effective cleaning.
Potential Impacts and Recommendations
The water remains safe to drink at all times. However, the flushing process may temporarily:
- Cause a slight drop in water pressure
- Lead to reddish or cloudy water.
Recommendations for residents:
-
If you notice discolored water, let cold water run for about a minute until it becomes clear
-
Avoid washing white clothes during the flushing hours to prevent staining.
-
Before doing a load of white laundry, run a pipe rinse cycle by letting the water flow.
We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.
